Wet/Dry filtration is highly effective because water is trickled over bio media on which reside beneficial bacteria. These bacteria are found everywhere in the aquarium and thrive in an environment where there is abundant oxygen. Trickling the water over the media provides this oxygen. Every major public aquarium uses this proven filtration method.

What is Wet/Dry Filtration?
Wet/dry trickle filtration, also known as a "trickle filter," is a type of biological filtration system that can be used in saltwater aquariums and freshwater aquariums.
In the Advantage wet/dry AIO aquarium, water is pumped from the aquarium into the AIO chamber by first passing through a the top media cup that contains filter floss. The floss holds back large pieces of food and other aquarium waste. The water then travels down through the second level of media cups that can hold various chemical conditioners such as activated carbon. The flexible design of the Advantage AIO allows you to remove the cups if preferred.
After the water passes through the cups, it travels back up the second chamber (which can also be used to hide an aquarium heater) and over the trickle plate covering the bio media chambers. The water then trickles over the bio-media, where beneficial bacteria colonies form on the surface and convert harmful ammonia and nitrite to nitrate, through a process called Nitrification.
The bio-media provides a large surface area for these bacteria to colonize and grow, which greatly increases the overall efficiency of the biological filtration.
Once the water has flowed through the bio-media it is then returned to the aquarium.
